Despite the bait click title we are not going to get lost in some re-imagined definition of the word "Delight". There is no reason to define "Delight" beyond it's actual meaning:
"Please (someone) greatly."
That's it. For the love of all things business and my own sanity, stick to the dictionary definition:
"Please (someone) greatly."
What does delight mean to you? See above. How do you define delight? See above. Notice the lack of words like "Brand" or "Experience". See above. Please. Now that we have settled that we can move into the story telling portion of this post.
About two years ago my Daughter and I were walking home from our local cafe. (Portland is just like that now) and we came upon a Llama. Yes a Llama. This one Llama to be exact. Rojo was making an appearance at a birthday party. He had on a crazy party outfit and was wearing a sombrero. My Daughter and I took one look at each other and did what one naturally does when confronted with a Llama in an urban setting; we went over to say hello!
Do you want to feed Rojo? Heck yes we do. Rojo loves him some carrots. Rojo loves him some attention. Rojo loves him some kids. Neighborhood dog who is always barking at me came up to Rojo, they muzzled each other like they were best buddies. Rojo loves strange dogs. Rojo loves to wear silly hats. Rojo, loves, everybody.
My Daughter and I were of course blown away and each deeply affected by the whole experience. First off, I'm a cat guy. After house cats, animals, and my tolerance for them, tends to fall off sharply. Rojo would binge watch the entire DVD set of 'ER' with you if that's what you wanted. Can we take a picture with Rojo? Yep take as many as you want. Rojo would happily dress up in old-timey wild west outfits as well. Rojo, loves, everybody. Because Rojo loves to Delight.
For the next few months I kept bugging our office manager to get Rojo in for a company event. Any event. Months went by and no Rojo. Our company party was a perfect candidate but the outdoor venue wouldn't allow Llamas. Which made no sense. Rojo could make it through security at the airport. Obviously they had never met Rojo.
Turns out someone at work also loved the Llamas (again we all do, we just might not know it yet) and we were organizing a quick at work wedding celebration for her. Rojo was the star attraction. Turns out I was out on vacation, and I must say just watching the events (I now refer to it as the 'Rojo effect') unfold over social media was as delightful, even virtually, as the first time I met Rojo.
Pure delight. So if you want a crash course in Marketing and spreading "Delight", Go see Rojo.
